Abstract: The edge plasma in tokamaks (within the last closed magnetic surface touching the limiter) is studied theoretically under conditions when the radiation from light impurities makes a strong contribution to its thermal balance. Simple appoximative formulas are proposed for the dependences of cooling rates of impurity ions on the electron temperature. A theory is developed for the so-called radiative potential equal the energy losses by electrons on the ionization and excitation of an impurity particle entering the discharge. The conditions of the onset of the states with "detached plasma" are explained for discharges with ohmic heating. The discharges with auxiliary heating and neon puffing are studied. The theory results are compared in detail with the experimental data from TEXTOR.
